As part of the Verizon team we got running tees and swag bags with another t-shirt and a few other things. There were 5000 participants raising money for the Jersey Battered Women's Center. The route was through the streets of Morristown, which blocked off many homes. Many people came out of their homes to cheer on the racers and had their garden hoses set up to spray out onto the street over the runners. I have never participated in a run before and found it amazing how kind and supportive everyone was ... even to us walkers. It was a fun evening.

Verizon Classic in 100 degree heat
Carolyn signed up for the Verizon Classic 5k corporate run in Morristown on Thursday night, along with Don and Tommy. Tommy couldn't make it so I tagged along. Since the weather was stinking hot on race day, the race was reduced to 2.2 miles and it was downgraded to no longer a race but a come-out-and-do-whatever. I walked it with my friend, Denise (Carolyn's internship manager), while Don, Carolyn and Denise's boyfriend, Jim, ran it. We were all sweating bullets before we even started and were soaked when we finished!

Riding out Hurricane Sandy in FL
We always
thought that if we were to get caught up in the aftermath of a hurricane it would be in Florida, but this time it was New Jersey.
Bryan was home taking care of our home.
Fortunately, we had no direct damage from downed trees. Bryan
sent photos of our road where he could hardly get his car through. He managed to
stay warm by the fireplace, charge his phone in the car, and BBQ his meals outside.
We continued to work remotely from Florida
as our colleagues and neighbors in NJ were without water and power. By Friday, our
Saturday flights seemed to be a ‘go’ but we still did not have power at home. I
decided to stay another week so I could work, and Don went home to check on Bryan and the house.
Fortunately our power was back as of late Friday. Everything was fine and … except for the
panic over finding gas!
We were lucky during
Hurricane Sandy, unlike so many – too many still struggling. Slowly but surely,
downed trees have been cut up and removed, transformers that sat on the side of
our roads for weeks have been picked up, roofs have been repaired, and wires have been
raised off the road.
Late October 2012, we decided to fly down to Florida
for a 3-day weekend. As we sat in Newark
Airport the televisions
were warning of the Halloween Monster Storm. Off we went, landing in PBI late
that night. As we landed Hurricane Sandy
was moving north towards the FL coast but far out to sea.
Friday was an exciting day on the beach – wind whipping, ocean riled, sand blasting our
skin – so fun.
Saturday was sunny and perfect, but the beach was ugly! Everyone was out on the beach surveying the damage; the storm surge being the greatest cause of damage, which was extensive. Up and
down the beach it was a mess. Debris, both natural and man-made, was
everywhere. Beach access stairways and ramps dangled in mid-air. Waves smashed
up against dunes, leaving no place to walk in some places. Inland, there was no
damage.

This is the pump house at the PB Inlet. We have never seen the ocean come in over the break wall on this side. It flooded nearby swimming pools with sand.
Our flight
back to NJ was to leave early Monday a.m. so we could both be back at work by
mid-morning. Even though Sandy
was not getting to NJ till late that Monday evening, our flight was cancelled. Our
offices had already sent out emails closing the office on Tuesday. That night
and next day, Sandy
pummeled NJ, as we all know from the devastating videos and photos. So much of
Jersey was without power. Trees down everywhere.
And so much of the shore gone.

Goodnight Irene
A lot of rain, some flooding, lots of leaves and limbs down - that was it for us. We lost power for just under two hours this morning. It's now very windy; just remnants of the storm going through now.
I had lots of bowls out on the deck collecting rainwater in case our power was out for an extended period of time. We're on well water so no power also means no water.
The white bin on our deck collected over 12 inches of rainwater.
Heavy winds passing through now.
We could still lose power yet if trees come down over wires. The ground is soaked. But, fortunately Irene has been a non-event for us - just an excuse for a hurricane party last night, a few blog posts, and a relaxing weekend overall! We hope other communities and families along the shore have their lives back to normal as soon as possible.

Awaiting the brunt of the storm
Lots and lots of rain - no strong wind yet. Just back from a "Waiting for Irene" hurricane party, where Hurricane drinks were served. Hoping for power tomorrow morning for coffee maker!
Come on Irene

3 days of snowfall?
This is day one of supposedly three straight days of snowfall. We've already had 2 snowfalls this week - wet, heavy snow - causing two delayed openings at the school and snow to be piled high. School has been cancelled today.
And of course this week my snow removal machine is in the UK! We have an endless driveway (at least it seems that way when shoveling) and the shoveling I did this morning is already completely filled in. Don did suggest I call a snowplow service if we get the full 18" to 24" predicted. Most of our neighbors have snowplow contracts for the winter season. This year I hear some have already paid over $1000 for snow removal! Yikes, that's airfare to Europe! We actually enjoy getting out to shovel ... but it does get a little old by the end of February!
On the plus side it is really beautiful! When you don't have to be anywhere and everyone is safe, its enjoyable. Nothing to do but relax, read, blog, surf the internet and get ready for the women's Olympic hockey final tonight. Go Canada!

Latest "epic" storm
Yes, they go overboard describing the weather these days, but thought you might be wondering how we're doing here in northern NJ. We didn't get a single flake from the last "epic" snowstorm that really hit the mid-Atlantic this past weekend. It missed us by about 30 miles to the south. But we did see flakes, many flakes today.
This picture is not very clear since I took it just now (at night) but if you scroll down a bit and compare it with an earlier shot of same area, you'll see the difference in snowfall. That's the same bench in the middle of this photo. Looks like we got about 12" to 18" as predicted. We had a snow day today but expect to be back into our usual routine tomorrow unless we get a lot more snow tonight. It was nice to have an unexpected lazy day.
Hope you've all fared well in this nor'easter. I know my Baltimore area friend (Anne) is buried, although they've all been out on foot (with dog, Bonnie) enjoying the neighborhood camaraderie! Always a bright side (as long as you have power)!

Snow on Groundhog Day night
It hasn't been a snowy winter so far - just freezing cold - but we got a bit last night that made everything look beautiful this morning.
After hearing we're in for 6 more weeks of winter, mother nature just had to confirm the forecast.
But tulips are available in the stores so we can brighten up our kitchens!

PSU canning weekend
This weekend 10 wonderful kids stayed with us for their PSU fundraising weekend. Most are from NJ and PA, one is from MD, and one is from Cleveland, Ohio. There were 8 guys from the same Frat as Bryan and 2 girls who are in nursing.
As canning weekends go, apparently it wasn't the most successful in terms of collecting donations. They seemed to be competing with the Salvation Army and the weather. About mid-afternoon on Saturday it started to lightly snow, then just dumped down on us for the next several hours. It was still relatively mild so the snow fell in huge fluffy flakes. Pretty to watch; not so pretty to drive in.

Chilling and napping in the family room after fundraising: Rush, Bryan, Brian, Nick, Andrew, Mike & Kyle.

They're all back to school for the last week of classes, followed by a week of exams. Then, home to their families for the holidays.

Nothing like getting the deck furniture out
Often before dinner, Don and I have a drink first to pause and talk about our days. As soon as the better weather arrives we do this outside. Yesterday was our first day of 2009 having cocktails outside. You can see the trees are still bare but the forsythia and daffodils are almost ready to pop.
Yesterday was also my parents' 54th wedding anniversary! To H&B! To Spring! Cheers (from our deck)!

Tree & Snow
Quick updates ...
Tree ... when I suggested to Don that we just get a small Christmas tree this year, he came back with the tallest tree we've ever had. It's at least 11 feet. We love it! Now all we need is Santa's visit to fill in the bottom.
Snow ... definitely a white Christmas is in store for us. This snowstorm couldn't have arrived at a more perfect time. We may get some rain before the 25th but for now its hard to believe this could all be gone in just a few days.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!
Awesome weather in the northeast this weekend. A perfect weekend for Thanksgiving. I'm thinking of my Canadian family and friends today.
Don & I went on a short hike today at Pyramid Mountain in Boonton, NJ. Here's the view from one of the lookouts. We're looking east towards Manhattan here, and although the photo doesn't show it, we could see the Empire State building and the skyline of NYC in the distance.
This photo was taken looking down at a little creek from a footbridge. You can see the rocks, reflection of trees and our shadows. Oh so artistic, Cath.

Lovin' spring
A week ago we were enjoying dinner on our deck (with sun setting, above) and the leaves were still buds. A week later the woods are filling in with leaves and my neighbors' homes are being camouflaged. Once spring springs, it doesn't waste any time.
Garden prep around here consists mostly of leaf removal. I've been leaf removal-ing for a month now. Can't wait to start planting again. For me that means planting in pots in protected areas since anywhere else means "Deer buffet, come and get it!"
Don got the kayaks down to the racks at the lake and he and Bryan have been out. We're just lovin' the myriad of colors and warmer temps - lovin' spring.

Winter Yo Yo
From spring temps to fluffy snow ... and spring temps. This is our first snowfall of 2008. The weatherman over promised and under delivered once again. The "big" snowstorm turned out to be 2 inches of pretty fluffy stuff. Much to the kids' dismay, it didn't even cause a delayed opening to school. Temps are supposed to drop as the week progresses - back to real winter?

White Stuff
Today we woke up to a wet blanket of snow everywhere! Beautiful but surprising. Of course it was all gone by mid-day, but pretty while it lasted. Here's the view out onto our deck ...
... and the view out the front door ...
Our kids have been off school Thur and Fri for the NJ teacher's convention. We spent the days revisiting a couple of campuses, this time focusing on the actual program offered in the area of Bryan's interests. I think we're now done with the visiting. Bryan just needs to finish up the applications - the arduous part being the various essay requirements. I don't envy him and all the other students but its got to be done!
With the early snowfall we're reminded that Thanksgiving (U.S.) is only 1-1/2 weeks away and Christmas is 6+ weeks away. Zoom zoom zoom.

Spring at the Tower
The Tower has some very interesting history. From fire watchtower to enemy aircraft look-out, from fancy dining room with a view to a hideout for a jilted bride, it is a beautiful part of our scenery. It is now sealed up and serves as a community landmark and communications tower (cell).

Spring!
This was only our 2nd big snowstorm of the year. The first one on, Feb 14, left Newark Airport looking more like a zoo on Feb 15 when Carolyn & I left for Florida. We'd never seen so many people in an airport. This 2nd one left me stranded in Dallas last Friday. I was able to piece together a flight home the next day so not a big inconvenience for me. Maybe I should stay home!
Happy Spring!
